Everything you need to know about Nakshatras, padas, and how your birth star shapes your chart.
What is a Nakshatra?
+
A Nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions of Vedic astrology, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the sidereal zodiac. Your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) is the nakshatra the Moon was placed in at the moment of your birth, and it shapes your emotional nature, dasha sequence, and many personal life themes.
How do I find my Nakshatra?
+
Enter your date of birth, time, and place into the VediqAstro Nakshatra finder and you instantly see your Janma Nakshatra, its pada (quarter), ruling planet, deity, and starting Mahadasha. No login required.
What is Nakshatra Pada?
+
Each of the 27 Nakshatras is divided into four padas (quarters) of 3 degrees 20 minutes each, totaling 108 padas across the zodiac. Your pada refines your Nakshatra reading by pointing to one of 12 sub-signs (Navamsa) and adds nuance to personality and partnership analysis.
How does Nakshatra affect my dasha?
+
Your starting Mahadasha is determined entirely by your Janma Nakshatra. Each Nakshatra is ruled by one of 9 planets, and that planet’s Mahadasha begins at birth with a length set by how far the Moon had moved through the Nakshatra at the time of birth.
What is the difference between Nakshatra and Rashi?
+
Rashi (sign) is one of the 12 zodiac signs of 30 degrees each, while Nakshatra is one of the 27 lunar mansions of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. Both are calculated from the Moon’s position at birth, but Nakshatra is finer-grained and is what Vedic astrology uses for dasha calculation, name selection, and compatibility matching.
Why is my Nakshatra important for marriage?
+
Vedic compatibility matching (Guna Milan) is based primarily on the Nakshatras of the two partners, not just sun or moon signs. The Nakshatra determines Varna, Vashya, Yoni, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi, the six of eight koota factors that account for the bulk of the 36-point compatibility score.
Is the Nakshatra finder accurate?
+
Yes. VediqAstro uses Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical engine used by professional Jyotisha software, with the Lahiri ayanamsa as the default. As long as your birth time and location are accurate, the Nakshatra and pada are computed with the same precision a qualified astrologer would produce.
