What Are Divisional Charts (Varga Kundali) and Why Do They Matter?
While your main birth chart (Rashi chart or D1) provides a broad overview of your life, Vedic Astrology's true power lies in its divisional charts - also known as Varga Kundalis. These derived charts zoom into specific life areas with remarkable precision.

Each divisional chart is created by dividing each zodiac sign into a specific number of equal parts. The planet's position within that division determines its sign in the divisional chart. The result is a completely new chart that focuses on one aspect of life.
The sage Parashara described 16 primary divisional charts, known as the Shodasha Varga scheme:

D1 - Rashi Chart (Main Birth Chart)
- Division: 1 (undivided - 30° per sign)
- Represents: Overall life, physical body, general life themes
- This is your primary Kundli
D9 - Navamsa Chart
- Division: 9 (each sign divided into 9 parts of 3°20')
- Represents: Marriage, spouse, dharma, spiritual strength
- Why it matters: Often called the "chart within the chart." Considered almost as important as D1. A planet strong in D1 but weak in D9 won't deliver its full promise. Read more about the Navamsa and marriage destiny.
D10 - Dasamsa Chart
- Division: 10 (each sign divided into 10 parts of 3°)
- Represents: Career, profession, public reputation, power
- Why it matters: Essential for career analysis. The 10th house analysis in D1 combined with D10 gives a comprehensive career picture.
D2 - Hora Chart
- Division: 2 (each sign divided into 2 parts of 15°)
- Represents: Wealth, financial prosperity
- Why it matters: Quick indicator of whether a planet supports or hinders wealth accumulation
D3 - Drekkana Chart
- Division: 3 (each sign divided into 3 parts of 10°)
- Represents: Siblings, courage, short journeys, efforts

- Represents: Children, progeny, creative output
- Why it matters: Critical for analyzing fertility and childbirth timing

- Why it matters: Considered the most specific of all divisional charts, but requires extremely accurate birth time (even 1-minute error can change it significantly)
How to Use Divisional Charts
The Confirmation Principle
A prediction should be confirmed across multiple charts:
- Check D1 (Rashi) for the general indication
- Check the relevant Varga for specifics
- If both agree, the indication is strong
- If they conflict, the result will be mixed or delayed
Varga Strength (Vargottama)
When a planet occupies the same sign in both the Rashi chart and a divisional chart, it's called Vargottama - meaning it gains extra strength. A planet that's Vargottama in D9 (same sign in D1 and D9) is especially powerful.
Practical Examples
Marriage analysis: Check Venus, 7th house lord, and 7th house in both D1 and D9 Navamsa. If Jupiter aspects the 7th house in D9, marriage is generally blessed.
Career analysis: Check the 10th house, its lord, and Saturn's placement in both D1 and D10 Dasamsa.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring D9 Navamsa: Never predict marriage without checking D9
- Over-relying on divisional charts with inaccurate birth time: Charts beyond D12 require very precise birth times
- Reading divisional charts independently: They should always be interpreted alongside D1
- Applying D1 rules to divisional charts: Some rules differ - consult classical texts
