Kundli Matching for Marriage: How the 36-Point Gun Milan System Works

Kundli Matching (horoscope matching) is one of the most widely practiced traditions in Hindu marriages. The Ashtakoot Gun Milan system evaluates compatibility between two prospective partners by comparing their Moon signs and Nakshatras across 8 dimensions, scoring up to a maximum of 36 points.

The system compares the birth Nakshatras (lunar mansions) and Moon signs of both individuals. Each of the 8 factors (Kootas) is assigned a maximum score:

Understanding Each Koota

1. Varna (1 Point) - Spiritual Compatibility

Categorizes individuals into four spiritual classes:

  • Brahmin (highest): Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
  • Kshatriya: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
  • Vaishya: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
  • Shudra: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

The groom's Varna should be equal to or higher than the bride's for full points. This reflects spiritual ego compatibility, not social caste.

2. Vashya (2 Points) - Mutual Attraction

Classifies signs into categories (human, quadruped, aquatic, wild, insect) and checks natural dominance patterns. Full points indicate balanced power dynamics.

3. Tara (3 Points) - Destiny Compatibility

Based on the counting of Nakshatras from each partner's birth star. Determines whether the couple's destinies support or conflict with each other.

4. Yoni (4 Points) - Physical Compatibility

Each Nakshatra is associated with an animal symbol. Yoni matching assesses physical and intimate compatibility:

  • Same animal = 4 points
  • Friendly animals = 3 points
  • Neutral = 2 points
  • Enemy animals = 0-1 points

5. Graha Maitri (5 Points) - Mental Compatibility

Compares the lords of both Moon signs. If the planetary lords are friends, mental wavelength aligns well.

  • Mutual friends: 5 points (e.g., Jupiter-Mars)
  • One friend, one neutral: 4 points
  • Both neutral: 3 points
  • Mixed (friend-enemy): 1 point
  • Mutual enemies: 0 points

6. Gana (6 Points) - Temperament Match

Classifies individuals into three temperaments:

  • Deva (Divine): Gentle, spiritual, idealistic
  • Manushya (Human): Balanced, practical, moderate
  • Rakshasa (Demon): Intense, independent, strong-willed

Same Gana = 6 points. Deva-Manushya = moderate compatibility. Deva-Rakshasa = challenging but not impossible.

7. Bhakoot (7 Points) - Love and Prosperity

Checks the relationship between both Moon signs. Certain combinations are considered inauspicious:

  • 6-8 relationship: Health and longevity concerns
  • 2-12 relationship: Financial difficulties
  • 5-9 relationship: Issues with progeny

However, Bhakoot Dosha has cancellation rules that many astrologers apply.

8. Nadi (8 Points) - Health and Progeny

The most heavily weighted factor. Based on Nakshatra classification:

  • Aadi (Vata/Wind)
  • Madhya (Pitta/Bile)
  • Antya (Kapha/Phlegm)

Same Nadi = 0 points (Nadi Dosha - considered the most serious incompatibility). Different Nadis = 8 points.

Interpreting the Score

Score RangeCompatibility Level
0-17Not recommended - significant challenges
18-24Acceptable - average compatibility with some adjustments
25-32Good - strong compatibility
33-36Excellent - highly compatible

The generally accepted minimum threshold is 18 out of 36 for a marriage to proceed.

Limitations of Gun Milan

While Ashtakoot matching is valuable, it has limitations:

  1. Only uses Moon and Nakshatra: Ignores the Ascendant, other planets, and house placements
  2. Doesn't check Manglik Dosha: Mars placement must be checked separately
  3. No Dasha compatibility: Doesn't assess whether planetary periods align favorably
  4. Exceptions exist: Even low-scoring couples can thrive if other chart factors are supportive

This is why experienced astrologers always perform comprehensive chart comparison beyond just the 36-point score. As we discuss in Kundli Matching Alone Is Not Enough, a holistic approach considers multiple factors.
