Transit to Natal Aspects: Finding the Exact Dates

A transit reading built on signs alone can tell you that a difficult few months are coming. A transit reading built on degrees can tell you the week.

The bridge between the two is drishti, the aspect, measured in degrees rather than counted in whole signs.

Drishti in houses, and the same rule in degrees

Every graha aspects the seventh house from itself. Three of them have additional special aspects.

The house counting and the degree measure are the same rule seen two ways. A house is thirty degrees, so the seventh house from a planet begins one hundred and eighty degrees ahead of it.

Conjunction, zero degrees, is not technically a drishti. It is included in practice because a transiting planet arriving on top of a natal planet is the single event astrologers quote most often.

Why degrees give you a date and signs do not

Say Saturn is transiting Pisces and your natal Venus is in Virgo. Counting by sign, Saturn aspects your Venus for the entire two and a half years it spends in Pisces. True, and useless.

Counting by degree, Saturn's seventh aspect is exact on the day Saturn reaches the point one hundred and eighty degrees from your Venus. If your Venus is at eight degrees of Virgo, that is the day Saturn reaches eight degrees of Pisces. In 2026 that falls in early March. Now you have a date.

The sign level answer and the degree level answer do not contradict each other. The sign says the theme is live. The degree says when it peaks.

Orb: how close is close enough

An aspect is not a switch that flips at the exact degree. It builds and fades. The orb is how far from exact you still count it.

There is no single classical number for transit orbs. Working practice usually runs between one and five degrees, and the honest way to use an orb is to treat it as a dial rather than a law:

• One degree gives you the peak days only. Use it to pick a date.
• Three degrees is the common working default. Use it to find the active fortnight.
• Five to eight degrees shows the broad period. Use it to see what is coming.

A wide orb on a fast planet is nearly meaningless, because the Moon crosses eight degrees in less than a day. A wide orb on Saturn can span months.

Applying and separating

Half of an aspect is on the way in and half is on the way out. The distinction matters.

An applying aspect is one where the separation is still shrinking. The event has not happened yet. Classical practice weights applying aspects more heavily, because the matter is still building.

A separating aspect is past exact. The energy is discharging. What it describes has usually already occurred, and the reading is about consequences rather than about anticipation.

The triple pass

This is where degree level reading earns its keep.

When a planet retrogrades over a natal point, it crosses the same degree three times: forward, back, forward again. So a single aspect produces three exact dates, often spread over several months.

The classical reading of the three passes is roughly this. The first pass raises the matter. The second, during retrograde, reopens and complicates it. The third settles it. A client who tells you a problem "came back" months after it seemed resolved is very often describing a second pass.

Saturn is retrograde from 27 July to 11 December 2026, and Jupiter from 14 December. Any aspect either of them makes near those windows should be checked for repeat passes rather than assumed to be a single event.

A worked example

Take a chart with natal Venus at eight degrees of Virgo, and ask when Saturn's seventh aspect reaches it in 2026.

Saturn begins 2026 at about two degrees of Pisces and ends it at about fourteen. The aspect is exact when Saturn reaches eight degrees of Pisces, which happens in the first week of March. With a three degree orb the aspect is live from roughly mid February to late March.

Now check for repeat passes. Saturn turns retrograde on 27 July, but by then it has climbed well past eight degrees, and its retrograde low stays above that point. So this aspect is exact once in 2026, not three times. Had the retrograde carried Saturn back below eight degrees, there would have been two more exact dates in the autumn.

That check, whether the retrograde arc actually recrosses the degree, is the step most hand calculations get wrong.

The nodes are a special case

Rahu and Ketu always move backwards, so they never station and never produce a triple pass in the ordinary way. Calling them retrograde is technically accurate and practically uninformative, which is why careful tools do not flag it.

Whether the nodes cast the fifth and ninth aspects at all is a genuine difference between lineages. Some accept it, some hold that the nodes aspect only by occupation. If your tradition rejects it, discard those rows.

Working it out without the arithmetic

Doing this by hand means pulling daily longitudes for every transiting graha, comparing each against every natal position for each of its aspect angles, and then hunting for sign changes in the difference to find the crossings. It is a spreadsheet job at best.

The orb is adjustable from one to eight degrees, and the Moon is excluded by default, because the Moon opposes every natal point once a lunar month and would bury the aspects that matter.
